The Care Economy Africa
Our project, an international collaboration led by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and various academic and economic partners, aims to transform care systems in Africa over a period of three to five years. We are focusing on early childhood care (ECC) and long-term care (LTC) for the elderly, in response to the social and economic impacts exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim is to develop innovative local solutions to improve care infrastructures, reduce inequalities and strengthen the resilience of African communities, drawing on the continent’s values and strengths.

Our Aims
- Generate Africa-focused knowledge on current contexts, arrangements, experiences and impacts on economics, welfare and distribution of care
- Develop macroeconomic tools to estimate the size and contribution to national income of care economies, and the effects of policies aimed at expanding care provision
- Bringing together coalitions of advocacy actors to shape and promote the use of evidence by key political players
- Establish links between African researchers and encourage joint analysis with other regions as part of the global initiative "Economies of care in context".

Basis Of Our Programme
We build on the Care Work and the Economy project (2017-2021), which assessed the economic and social impacts of existing care arrangements in South Korea and developed innovative gender-sensitive tools for policy analysis. In addition, we are leveraging APHRC’s engagement at the continental level to address missing care and life chances in the pursuit of a demographic dividend in Africa.

Our Research
We intend to achieve our goals through a holistic approach that involves four interactive sets of activities or work packages (WP)
A comprehensive empirical investigation of present contexts, norms, arrangements, experiences and impacts of ECC and LTC provision and receipt.
Gender-sensitive, care embedded macroeconomic modelling for policy analysis
Strategic policy and stakeholder engagement within the Africa region
Connecting, and enabling joint, comparative analyses, between, our Africa-focused work and that of other regional and country teams in the ‘Care Economies in Context’.
