Consultative forum on new pan African feminist and decolonial framework on long-term care

The « Care Economy Africa » (CEAP) project is led by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in collaboration with several African academic partners. It aims to examine the current realities and desired futures for the provision and receipt of long-term care (LTC) for the elderly in Kenya and Africa.

The CEAP project aims to:

  • Develop an anchored approach to examining the necessary balance between LTC provision by families, the state and other actors in Kenya, as well as the aspirations to serve in this area.
  • Focus the perspectives and aspirations of those involved in the provision and receipt of LTC.
  • Challenge and open up possibilities for disrupting persistent oppressions and injustices in the context of African development trajectories.

A two-day consultative forum is scheduled for August 13-14, 2024, to discuss a new feminist and decolonial pan-African framework for LLS in Kenya.

Expected results

  • A refined critique of the pursuit of the « women’s unpaid care work » and « care economy » agendas in the Kenyan context.
  • An elaborate theoretical and conceptual critique of these agendas, as well as a proposed new approach to generating meaningful accounts of issues and solutions for LTC in Kenya and potentially in other African contexts.
  • A series of reflections in the form of blog posts or other formats, from young researchers and other observers participating in the workshop.
